Cleaning Fresh Produce
Last week we did a post about suggested ways to select fresh fruits and vegetables. We chose a selection of common produce and gave brief suggested ways to make sure you are choosing the best produce. If you did not have a chance to check it out, then we highly encourage you to do so.
This week we will focus on cleaning our fresh produce that we have selected. Our company only deal with 100% Organic Fresh produce; however, we STILL have to wash our produce. Please, Please, Please do not believe the myth that organic produce does not need to be washed. Remember that produce comes from soil and once the produce is picked, then it passes through several hands before it reaches your kitchen table. This post is not intended to gross you out, but to inform you that bacteria still exist (much less than non-organic produce) on organic produce; therefore, you should still wash/clean ANY produce that you will consume.
Here are a few tips for cleaning your fruits and vegetables:
Wash firm fruits and root vegetables such as celery, apples, and cucumbers once you purchase and bring them in your kitchen
Do not wash delicate fruits such as strawberries and blueberries UNTIL just before you are ready to consume them. This helps keep them dry and stay free from mold
Wash all pre-packaged produce even if it says it has been washed, double washed, triple washed….
When washing, DO NOT use detergent, soap, or other cleaning chemicals. Use ONLY water and/or vinegar.
Please feel free to leave a comment below or any other suggestions for cleaning your produce.
Thanks for tuning in this week and look forward to our future post!
